Since 1951, The Arc of the South Shore has been dedicated to supporting individuals of all ages and disabilities throughout Massachusetts, helping them to achieve their fullest potential. Through a wide range of services, The Arc focuses on providing the tools and resources necessary for every person to thrive.
New Group Home for People with Autism
The organization has set its sights on an important mission: to address the specific needs of individuals in the autism community, particularly adults with autism. “We have a unique platform for the future here and what I’m trying to do as CEO is meet unmet needs in the community, particularly the autism space. People aren’t aware that 1 in 36 children are diagnosed with autism,” CEO Abigail Parrilla said.
At the forefront of The Arc’s initiatives is the issue of supporting adults with autism who are turning 22 and are at risk of falling through the cracks of the education system. These individuals often face a transition period in which they lose the services and structure that were once available to them.
“When an adult child turns 22 in the system, the education system drops off… and parents are left to navigate. Now the state does a great job with the Turning 22 initiative through the Department of Development Services, but they need appropriate housing,” Parrilla told WBZ-TV. This marks a critical challenge for many families who are left searching for housing solutions after their children age out of the educational system.
Meeting the Need for Housing
The Arc of the South Shore is taking significant steps to address this gap in services by opening a group home specifically for adults with autism who are transitioning out of the education system at age 22. This new initiative aims to provide a safe and supportive environment for individuals in need of appropriate housing and care.
“One of the things we’ve decided to do is look at that unmet need, partner with the Department of Developmental Disabilities, and create specifically Turning 22 autism group homes. In 18 months, we will have our first one,” Parrilla said. This new group home is just the beginning of a broader effort to expand housing options and create more opportunities for independence among adults with autism in the community.
The group’s commitment to these individuals is personal. The Arc recognizes that adults with autism often experience a significant gap in services once they leave the education system. This gap can leave families feeling lost, with few options to help their loved ones navigate the challenges of adulthood.
Families Share Their Stories
The impact of The Arc’s services is already being felt by families who have seen firsthand the positive changes in their loved ones. Roseann and Frankie Mirisola have been involved with The Arc for many years, and Roseann shares her appreciation for the care her brother receives through the program.
“It’s amazing. I love knowing that he is happy. To be surrounded by people who love him, who have his best interests at heart. They take a lot of care,” Roseann said. For families like hers, The Arc’s focus on the unique needs of adults with autism has been life-changing, providing their loved ones with a supportive environment in which they can thrive.
A Vision for the Future
Parrilla remains deeply committed to advocating for the autism community, always striving to ensure that individuals with autism receive the care and support they deserve. She views her work as a privilege and remains dedicated to the cause.
“I joke, but it’s the truth. I don’t have bad days at work. I am honored to serve this amazing population. For me, every day is about the unique and beautifully abled individuals I serve,” Parrilla said. Her passion for supporting adults with autism continues to drive The Arc’s mission forward, and their efforts will undoubtedly make a lasting impact on the lives of many in Massachusetts.
In the coming years, The Arc of the South Shore plans to expand its services to better meet the needs of adults with autism. With new group homes on the horizon, they are committed to ensuring that individuals can live with dignity, independence, and the support of a caring community.
